Uruguay to sell cannabis in drug stores
Uruguay will become the first country in the world to legally sell cannabis over the counter in pharmacies. The country had already legalized cultivation, distribution and consumption of marijuana in 2013 but authorization for pharmacies has not been secured until now.

'Silk Road' train from Britain leaves for China
The first-ever freight train from Britain to China started its mammoth journey on 10th April along a modern day "Silk Road' trade route. The 32-container train, around 600 metres long will travel 12,000 Kilometer to reach British.

U.S., Russia together to probe on Syria chemical weapons
The United States and Russia on 12th April agreed to work together on an international investigation of a Syrian chemical weapons attack. In northern Syria on April 4th, more than 80 people were killed in what the U.S. has described as a gas attack that Assad's forces carried out. Russia says rebels dispersed whatever chemical agent was found.

LS passes bill for constitutional status to BC Classes Commission
The Lok Sabha on 10th April passed a constitutional amendment (102nd) which introduces a National Commission for Socially and Educationally Backward Classes in the Constitution The National Commission for Backward Classes Bill 2017 to repeal the 1993 law was also passed.

Survey General of India completes 250 years
Survey of India completes 250 years of its service to the nation and is celebrating its achievements in 2017. The 10th of April is also celebrated as National Survey Day. As a part of its 250 years completion celebrations, Survey of India has proposed to remeasure the height of Mount Everest during the year 2017. India was the first country to have declared the height of Mount Everest and establish it as the highest peak in the world in the year 1855.

@Bangladesh: India announced an additional $4.5 billion concessional line of credit for implementation of projects in Bangladesh, and another $500 million for Dhaka to procure defence equipment

@ India and Bangladesh have signed more than 20 agreements to boost cooperation in a wide array of sectors, including setting up more border haats (temporary markets)

@ The two sides have also restored bus and train links between Kolkata and Khulna, and Radhikapur and Biral.

@ Australia: India and Australia have signed various agreements, including one for expanding counterterrorism cooperation, the two countries had signed a civil nuclear cooperation three years ago but the actual supply has not yet commenced in the absence of any commercial contract.

Expert Committee recommends to lower Fiscal deficit
An expert committee, headed by former Revenue Secretary NK Singh has called for a gradual reduction of the fiscal deficit to 2.5 per cent of the GDP and revenue deficit to 0.8 per cent by 2022-23. It has also said the Centre should replace the existing Fiscal Responsibility and Budget Management (FRBM) Act, 2003, with a new law and also set up a Fiscal Council. In the current fiscal, the Centre plans to lower its fiscal deficit to 3.2 per cent and the revenue deficit to 1.9 per cent. The FRBM Committee, set up in May 2016 to review the Centre's fiscal roadmap, had submitted its report on January 23, 2017.

MSP of raw jute hiked
Union Cabinet approved a hike of 300 rupees per quintal in Minimum Support Price of raw jute for 2017-18 season taking it to a level of 3500 rupees. The Cabinet also approved setting up of Government e-Market-place Special Purpose Vehicle (GeM SPV) as a national portal for procurement of goods and services required by the Central and State government organizations.

Presidential nod for GST laws
President Pranab Mukherjee has given assent to four key legislations on Goods and Services Tax (GST), paving the way for the roll out of one-nation-one- tax regime from July 1st. The legislations were The Central GST Act 2017, The Integrated GST Act 2017, The GST (Compensation to States) Act-2017, and The Union Territory GST Act 2017. The GST, the biggest taxation reform since Independence, will subsume central excise, service tax, Value Added Tax (VAT) and other local levies to create an uniform market

The Agriculture Ministry joined hands with the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC) to geo-tag agricultural assets. Besides, ponds, crop area, warehouses, laboratories would also be geo-tagged for their real-time monitoring and effective utilization.
