US shutdown ends as Congress strikes deal The US government partial shutdown is ending after Republicans and Democrats voted to approve a temporary funding bill. The Deal was made on 22nd January, to end the three-day shut down.

Officially shutdowns in 5 years: The US government officially shutdown on 20th January for the first time in five years after lawmakers failed to agree on a spending deal.

Unemployment to rise: ILO Report on India: In India, the number of jobless is expected to increase to 18.6 million in 2018 and 18.9 million in 2019, against 18.3 million in 2017, as per the ILO report. The unemployment rate is estimated at 3.5 per cent for all three years

As Asia-Pacific continues to create jobs at a very fast rate, unemployment in the region is expected to remain low by worldwide standards, at around 4.2% in 2018, said the report. The International Labour Organization projects that the number of employed persons in Asia-Pacific region will grow by some 23 million (or 1.2 per cent) between 2017 and 2019. Projections indicate that 72% of workers in Southern Asia, 46% in South-Eastern Asia and the Pacific, and 31% in Eastern Asia will be in vulnerable employment by 2019, showing very little change from 2017

Cyber Surakshit Bharat Yojna launched Union Government has launched the Cyber Surakshit Bharat Yojna to strengthen cyber security. It will be operated on the three principles of awareness, education and enablement. The Government has launched this initiative with a primary objective to keep the country data safe and protected. The initiative is the first public-private partnership of its kind and will leverage the expertise of the IT industry in cyber security

Special websites launched for Divyangs Social Justice and Empowerment Minister Thaawarchand Gehlot on 19th January launched 100 accessible websites for Divyangs. These 100 government websites are now divyang friendly.The divyang-friendly websites, especially for visually impaired, use features such as screen readers and screen magnifiers, which can relay website content to the user in audio format.

India joins Australia Group export control regime India, on 19th January, joined the Australia Group export control regime, an informal forum which seeks to ensure that exports do not contribute to the development of chemical or biological weapons. India is 43rd member in this group.

Govt announces the names of nine new smart cities Nine more smart cities were declared by the Union Urban Development Minister Hardeep Singh Puri on 19th January. With  this the total number of cities had gone to 99. The new cities selected under Smart Cities are Silvassa in Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli, Erode in Tamil Nadu, Diu in Union Territory of Daman and Diu, Biharsharif in Bihar, Bareilly, Saharanpur and Moradabad in Uttar Pradesh, Itanagar in Arunachal Pradesh and Kavaratti in Lakshadweep.

India at 62 among emerging economies According to World Economic Forum Inclusive Development Index, India is ranked at 62nd place among emerging economies. The ranks were released by the World Economic Forum before the start of its 48th annual meeting. Norway remains the world's most inclusive advanced economy, while Lithuania again tops the list of emerging economies. The Inclusive Development Index is an annual assessment economic performance of 103 countries.

India to grow at 7.4 per cent in 2018: IMF International Monetary Fund (IMF) said India is projected to grow at 7.4 per cent in 2018 as against China's 6.8 per cent, making it the fastest growing country among emerging economies following last year's slowdown due to demonetization and the implementation of the GST. In its latest World Economic Outlook (WEO) update released on 22nd January in Davos, Switzerland.

Inequality increases in India The richest 1 per cent in India cornered 73 per cent of the wealth generated in the country last year, a new survey showed on 21st January. Besides, 67 crore Indians comprising the population's poorest half saw their wealth rise by just 1 per cent, as per the survey released by the international rights group Oxfam hours before the start of the annual congregation of the rich and powerful from across the world in this resort town. Last year's survey had showed that India's richest 1 per cent held a huge 58 per cent of the country's total wealth, higher than the global figure of about 50 per cent. This year's survey also showed that the wealth of India's richest 1 per cent increased by over Rs 20.9 lakh crore during 2017, an amount equivalent to total budget of the central government in 2017-18, according to Oxfam India

India wins world cup cricket India has retained the World Cup for the Blind. In the final on 20th January, India defeated Pakistan by at Sharjah in UAE. The tourney was held from 8-20 January 2018 in Pakistan and the United Arab Emirates

Padma Awards Announced The President of India Ram Nath Kovind approved Padma Awards for 85 individuals, which includes 3 Padma Vibhushan, 9 Padma Bhushan and 73 Padma Shri. Fourteen of the awardees are women and 3 persons have been awarded posthumously.
